Free Agent Fighting Plastic Waste

About Speaker

In 2020, Eric stepped away from the Executive Board of adidas to exclusively focus on lending his passion and experience to the fight for a zero waste future.

While Executive Board Member of Global Brands, Eric led all adidas, Reebok and Yeezy Business Units, sub-brands as well as key Brand functions including Product Design, Innovation, Sustainability, Marketing, Brand Management and Digital Brand Commerce.
Since joining the Executive Board in 2014, Eric reset the adidas brand by unleashing a culture of collaboration and creativity, and by inviting employees, athletes and consumers to create the future of sport together. He prioritized innovation and used sustainability successes like the launch of the adidas Parley Ocean Plastics Shoe to reorient the adidas brand and business to create sustainable impact at scale. Under this philosophy and Eric's leadership, adidas consistently out-paced its competition posting strong double digit growth.

A former competitive swimmer, and Oceans Advocate, Eric has merged his passion for the water with his open-source approach to business, catalyzing a company-wide commitment to sustainability. To fight marine pollution, he initiated a partnership with Parley for the Oceans in 2014, committing to create 11 million pairs of shoes made of Parley Ocean Plastic in 2019, and drove the ambitious goal of eliminating virgin polyester from adidas products by 2024. He has shared his vision and practical experiences with up-cycling plastics as both a cause for good and a driver for business growth at the United Nations and COP21, with the aim to onboard other brands and businesses in the mission to save the oceans by eliminating plastic waste.

During his 26-year career with adidas, Eric was at the forefront of consumer led innovation. His success is underpinned by a visionary view of the future and the know-how to impact the now. His approach delivers exponential business results by bridging consumer need, with fast paced advancements in technology and a nimble organization that prioritizes speed to execution. He helped found adidas Boost cushioning in 2012 and scaled it to over 4B in business by 2018. He established a billion dollar business around artist Kanye West in a little over 3 years and has scaled the adidas eCom platform to reach 4B in 2020. Most recently, Eric led the introduction of adidas Futurecraft 4D, the world’s first running shoe featuring the revolutionary additive manufacturing technology – Digital Light Synthesis.

Eric sits on the Parley for the Oceans Steering Committee and is on the Board of Directors of Carbon 3D, a Silicon Valley-based digital 3D Manufacturing company.

Eric’s greatest passion is his wife, two daughters and his son who he spends time with at home in Germany and surfing on the Oregon Coast.
